I'm not going to argue in favor of the mandate. But I do think its more reasonable than many other local, state, or federal, intrusions in to the economy. Whether or not it has sufficient justification, it has more justification behind it then say rent control, or the way taxi medallion systems are run, or many of the occupational licensing requirements, or the Boeing NLRB case.

"But honestly, I find the mandate to buy auto insurance to be a significant intrusion."

I'm in total agreement, Dave. The auto insurance industry went state by state, buying the legislatures to force this mandate, one after the other. They swore up and down that rates would go DOWN, yet they went UP, in EVERY case. Local police serve as enforcers for the insurance companies.

This is why I don't like Obamamcare, as well. It should be a public, GOVERNMENT function, NOT a market function. The private insurance companies GREED will make it a failure.

It's just part of the ongoing wussification of America, where NO ONE wants to take a risk.
