Kim,

I want to respond to a post you put up Friday evening about institutional holdings in Telescan, but don't want to go back and search through the thousands of posts since to find the original<g>.

Telescan (MarketGuide actually) posts the institutional holdings as a percentage of the outstanding stock. When the shares outstanding change, the percentage will also. That's what happenned with IPM a few weeks ago. MG began to include the 3MM escrowed shares and the institutional percentage dropped from 35% to 30%. However, this wasn't a change in the number of shares owned by the institutions, only the percentage of the outstanding shares. Shares stayed the same.

The percentage figures can be used to get en eyeball trend of changing institutional ownership over time. However, to use them properly, you should multiply the percentage figure by the number of outstanding shares and track the actual number of shares owned by the institutions. That's how they are generated in the first place, of course - MG surveys the institutions and collects total share holdings and then converts to percentage. You need to do the reverse.

Sorry to be so verbose, but I've been caught in that same trap before.

Alan
