Thanks for the news

Greetings Shlomi

Rockwell announced joint development of hdsl2 with orctf today @ 8:00 am in usa.
7 1/2 hours after your post...

As they seem to have been working together all along, am choosing to believe the delay in announcement due to orctf holding out for their $ fair share <g>

Rockwell, Harris and Fujitsu... not a bad trio for orctf silicon partners.

Orctf and Siemens would fit the German theme for vdsl.... <g>

Orctf maybe signing with large distributer in us and europe is also both intriguing and promising... Consumer market? Lots of room for speculation...

Bet you're right about ecilf eying orctf's adsl (and maybe vdsl and hdsl?). Know orctf did some contract work for them some time back, and orctf seems to be giving them some competition in the european hdsl market. Today's rok announcement would seem to make orctf all that more formidable in the hdsl arena...

Do you know who makes ecilf's hdsl silicon?

On a rockwell tangent.. they recently picked up comstream with whom orctf developed the CM701 digital satellite modem, which "has been recognized by the industry as a de facto standard to which other satellite modems are measured." (orctf/comstream recieved a 1996 BIRD foundation award for the product). orctf satellite stuff?... maybe again one of these days... <g>

and orctf seems to be in a 1000 line adsl trial in the Netherlands...

Maybe the european adsl market is moving more quickly than usa. US telecom procurement paralysis?

Thanks again,
s

.... One down ....

Greetings Shlomi,

Warning long post... hope you don't mind...

>>...during 1998 VDSL will be signed in Europe
and I heard it is Siemens...<<

Your sources are good... VDSL stuff (silicon and other) must be on track and looking ok for the announcement to be made so "soon" ....;)..

Maybe the potential of the vdsl market is such that it's time to put the pedal-to-the-metal... On the face of it, things do seem pretty good... Ready-to-roll bleeding edge technology , affordable price points, no competition on the horizon , huge demand, and siemens as a "partner"...

Seems pretty clear at this point that orctf/siemens goes way back... and that they've been working together (at least on vdsl) for some time. Did you notice Geof H.'s post that siemens (thru star) has an equity position in orctf?

Along these lines, have been wondering if orctf will end up with an equipment partner for europe that would parallel their relationship with fujitsu for n. america. Orctf's strength is in europe, and europe may be closer to deployment on a large scale than the usa, so it would make a certain amount of sense.

Suppose the fujitsu relationship could be expanded to cover europe, and for specific products (sonet etc), that may well be a possibility, but seems like there is a good chance relationships may also evolve in other directions.

Keep coming back to Italtel (Telecom Italia- Siemens/Stet)... altho this last april they announced co-operation with amtx for adsl... orctf seems to have had some relationship all along... and now amtx is out of the picture...

Seems there is quite a bit of orctf history with Telecom Italia thru hdsl... and then adsl through the AMUSE project and adsl trials. Orctf was the only AMUSE xdsl supplier (and paid to participate). Their portion was adsl, end to end ATM, to residential users. Other big AMUSE players included Italtel, Telecom Italia, and Siemens...

In june of this year orctf announced the winning of an adsl trial tender in western europe. "The operator, for competitive reasons, ... postponed the official announcement of the project...". At the time Telechoice speculated that it was Telecom Italia.

One of orctf's press releases this fall on the Geneva exhibition mentioned: "...Orckit's ADSL central office line card is shown in Italtel's ATM-based DSLAM"... Asked orctf about this and they replied that this dlsam was indeed AMUSE related and had been jointly developed by Italtel/orctf for that project...

On the siemens side, we now have the orctf/siemens vdsl partnership.. and also orctf's adsl over isdn leads to siemens' doorstep (DT adsl trials)...

In any case, now it seems that my assumptions about siemens' adsl plans need revisiting both for equipment and silicon. Siemens had announced they were marketing Amati ADSL modems and distribution systems, and, with the strong amtx/TI silicon connection, it seemed logical siemens would also go with TI's c6x.

Now amtx has been subsumed into TI... and is no longer in the equipment business. Altho wstl has inherited the equipment end of amtx, am not so sure that they will be able to provide siemens the critical dmt expertise moving forward ... time will tell...

On the silicon side, have been assuming that siemens would move forward on their own with the c6x, after all, there would still be the amtx connection through TI.... and 3com, a strategic partner of siemens, was clearly going with the c6x as well.

After this last week, 3coms' adsl silicon plans do not seem as clear and therefore don't think it is a given that siemens will go with TI or even the same supplier as 3com... again we should know within a couple of months...

In the soon to be deregulated world of european telecommunications, would think that Alcatel will be serious adsl competition for all parties looking for european adsl marketshare. Ala seems to be going after adsl in a big way (and looking good). Don't think Italtel (or Telecom Italia or Siemens) can afford to let them get too much of a lead...

Would be interested in any info on potential orctf european equipment partners you might have heard... also any info on siemens/italtel adsl plans whether related or not...

thanks
s

..... and one to go ......

>> ...(orctf) signing soon with large distributer in the U.S. and the same one for Europe for I think, the retail or pc market...<<

Did you get any sense of order of magnitude of "large"?... large like 3com? ... or large like Boca Research?

and do you think the agreement will cover all new xdsl silicon? or just adsl?

Sounds like modems... wonder whether the agreement would cover modems for telco rollouts or just retail? ... or both?

thanks again
any and all info appreciated
