I think solar is really cool. If you want to pay for it and set up your own, go for it. It's more like a hobby right now. As you said.

OTOH, our local Power company just built a solar collector to pre-heat water going into the powerplant. Sames money on fossil fuel to turn it to steam.

There's no reason that the photovoltaic cells can't just BE the roofing material. You install them on the areas where the sun shines, and regular shingles where it doesn't.
