Neeka:
I'll let someone else go for the difference of how much 3 or 25 megs is.

My question is are you sure you can get DSL? You said you were "up in the mountains". You must be quite a distance from what is called a "switching station". I recently was told by ATT that I can not get DSL at our cabin because I am more than ~15,000 feet from a switching station (we are about 6 miles or about 32,000'). We ran into this same issue years ago with my inlaws in that they were too far from a station. Just wondering.

As far as price if we could of got DSL it would of been $19.95 for first year.

Neeka, once you get the phone, try dial-up first and see if it fits your needs. It may if you only use it for email and news. If you want play online games or stream videos, broadband is a must.

Enter your zip code to see if Clearwire works for you clearwire.com

dial-up is limited to 56 kbps [1 kbps = 1,000 bits per second download speed].

the slowest and cheapest DSL is about 10 times as fast. Both come over your phone line, but clearwire comes over the air - like cell phone service.

A 3 mb file would take you about 8 minutes to download on dialup, 15 seconds on 1.5 dsl, and a couple of seconds on 4-5 cable connection.

A 25 mb file would be about and hour, 2 minutes, and 45 seconds respectively.

3 mbs per second is not slow. Unless you are doing a lot of large downloads you should be fine. If at all possible, never go back to dialup. You will spend a lot of time waiting for webpages to load. I would seriously consider giving up my computer if I were to go back to dailup. JMO
