Safety concerns. For all I know, he may carry all or most of the time.

In Alaska, my brother used to carry a 357 magnum derringer while jogging, because occasionally a polar bear would spot him and give chase! The loud little gun would drive it off.

I can't really think of why you'd need one in Texas, unless he feared an armed liberal, like me! The coyote was no threat to him, probably not frightened by him, and as surprised as any other dog would have been when he was shot.

Don't Christians of your ilk believe that everything on Earth was provided by God for man's use? Coyotes were given to Rick Perry so he could shoot them for his amusement. Just as the 70 drugged pheasants a drunken Dick Cheney had thrown in front of him so HE could shoot them were..

why would anyone carry a gun while jogging?

Same reason when not jogging - self defense against against varmints of two and four legged variety.
