steve-

as always, a good post, if a little paranoid.

i agree with your thinking RE: waiting for the supreme court. however, i do not think the pricing is indicative of a service that is not ready for deployment. IMHO, GTE is pricing for the market, which is upscale users. i wish they would deploy here in austin, even at 125, its still a good deal.

now, as for competing with cable...much has been made of the problems with the local loops, most of the press seems to think the telcos dont know much about their networks. while i have no doubt that there will be problems with rollouts, i do not buy the assertion that the RBOCs do not know how to get around the problems in a short period of time.

as for the relative merits of xDSL and HFC, we have discussed these ad nauseum. maybe bill or curly would like to argue the whole thing with you.

remember one thing though, those 'billions' going into cable are going to be eaten quickly. the RBOCs on the other hand have billions to burn and can easily get any financing they need. after all, they have been bleeding us dry for decades. cable has only had 15 years to bleed the consumers, and they spent most of it piling on debt to build out the network.

it is indeed going to be interesting.

good luck to all,
trey
