Man-made rules created by the "priesthood" elite. These rules/regulations can act to support and enhance the spiritual experience, but can just as easily be exploited to exploit man's fears and doubts about their existence.

There'a another way to look at the rules that Christianity teaches. They keep people out of trouble if they follow them. To the extent people live by what they're taught in church:

they generally don't get thrown in jail

generally get to grow up in families with two sober responsible parents, helping one another make a family and home

unlikely to an STD

unlikely to "need" an abortion

likely to be a stable reliable employee or business person

Its not necessarily easy to live by those rules, doing so involves saying no to yourself and your urges. But if you can, to the extent you can ... you WILL be better off for having done so.

So how is it these rules made by a priestly elite turn out to work so well for humans? Maybe those priests were very wise or maybe the rules come from the being that made humans and knows their nature.
