I disagree regarding moderators on stock boards. The Microcap Kitchen thread here on SI is home to a group of us that have been together since before SI existed. It is a stock message board, but there is a universe of hundreds of stocks we talk about overall. Occasionally, we get a disruptive poster who destroys the harmony of the board. So, after a few private messages between several of us, we elect to have the board moderator ban the individual.

The moderator function with the right to ban is necessary, and if that function is disabled on a board to board basis, our group may have to find another home.

to summarize:
1. enhance ignore features (let's call it "filtering")
2. eliminate banning
3. do not even think of letting moderators delete posts

welllll...that makes me 1 outta 3 which is better than my usual average...

Seriously, if you let people create their own filters there is absolutely no reason to have the ban feature at all.

Needless to say, I absolutely agree. Plus, if I ignore someone, I'd love it if that meant they cannot reply to any of my posts. That way, it's a true ignore, not just a one way street, where they can still spew crap I don't want to read, in my direction.

But, I do not know if that is possible, coding wise, so not holding my breath.

Instead of completely eliminating banning, how about a temporary "time out" function? Maybe a five-day ban feature that would allow a moderator to meter the flow of posts and remove abusive posters during a heated exchange.
