Spammers are not a problem on SI. Never have been! The admins have always dealt with them, pronto. So does the software, should they post multiple times to multiple threads. Been that way since the very beginning, as SI Admin Ron can attest. I've PM'd him hundreds of times to deal with them, and he always did, like lightning fast. Pretty sure he will continue to do so.

Bottom line, I simply have zero tolerance for banning and deleting posts.

I've said all I want to, on this topic. Case closed, as far as I am concerned.

Best!

I will cast my vote to keep the Ban function. I do recognize the negative side of this function in that the Moderator can active subjectively in banning people that do not agree with his viewpoint.

The Ban is effective when a poster gets wound up about a topic and makes personal attacks and uses vulgar language. It is also effective when a poster will not stop posting on an off-topic subject (such as politics) when she or he has been asked to stop. I have seen examples of both situations.

I think the ban function is very important... on my threads, i encourage a highly spirited debate, it brings out the best in people and it challenges the honesty of your arguments... I treat my threads just like an open town hall meeting where issues can be discussed without fear of being banned just because you may have a different perspective... but, if someone is rude and unruly and/or abusive to the other guests, then the ban function is absolutely necessary, it's like having a security officer available to escort the unruly and disruptive poster out of the meeting... without any such controls, how else you moderate and maintain an orderly discussion?
