On the Internet, where historical summaries are often disconnected from their sources entirely, Lincoln's alleged words are rapidly hardening into unqualified historical fact.

Unfortunately, there are a great many things on the Internet that are "rapidly hardening into unqualified historical fact."

THANKS for some very good historical research. Glad to have the matter set in context.

Updating my population figures for the US around 1860--descriptions of the 1860 US population found on the net were around 31.2 million--not the 22 million I guestimated.

Civil War deaths on both sides for all reasons, not just combat, were estimated to have been around 620,000. Would have to add to that figure whatever totals would come from wounded. In the VN war deaths were about 58K and wounded about 304K--a rough 1 to 5 ratio, but think the ratio would have been lower in the civil war as medical techniques were not advanced enough to save a high percentage of wounded.
