Since the war wasn't ended and we got Nixon, I think it was a pretty big mistake. Perhaps Carter would have lost anyways, but surely you haven't forgotten his being primaried by Teddy, and then Teddy totally dissing him at the convention? This was the man who put solar panels on the White House. And Clinton won in a landslide, but it was no thanks to the left. And then... Gore. Who wasn't President but was pretty well deserted by the left. That worked out well, too.
