I suggest to Ed that he read "Inside the Tornado" (and "Crossing the Chasm"). He would get a great deal of insight into what you are saying. The book is significant in that it is either reflecting accurately the marketing strategies of high-tech companies; or it is defining the strategies; or both.

Fred & Intel Investors - Sony is Showing a Pentium Based Mini NoteBook at Comdex:

There is a battle brewing between the Windows CE hand helds (almost exclusively non-Intel) and these new mini notebooks from Toshiba (Libretto), Mitsubishi and now Sony - which all run REAL WINDOWS!

My bet is that the mini's win!

Sony previews
mini-notebook
By Jim Davis
November 17, 1997, 6:00 p.m. PT

comdex LAS VEGAS--Look closely at the
Sony booth and you still might not see the
company's newest offering--a mini-notebook
less than an inch thick and weighing under
three pounds, a product that could drive
mini-notebooks into the mainstream.

Sony wants to put its stamp on this emerging
market with the PCG-505, the newest of the
Vaio notebooks introduced today in Japan.
The diminutive device comes with a 133-MHz
Pentium MMX processor, a 1GB hard drive,
32MB of memory, and a 10.4-inch active
matrix display. It's currently priced at around
$2,500.

Other unique features of Sony's stylish
notebook is a stylus for inputting handwriting
on a touchpad, which typically functions as a
mouse pad. Conceivably, one push of a
button could launch a frequently used
program.

Fred and ALL: Article...Fujitsu Sells Pentium II Based NT Workstations

November 18, 1997 (TOKYO) -- Fujitsu Ltd. started selling four models of Pentium II-based NT workstations with enhanced graphics functions for engineering applications.

Fujitsu's new PC-based workstations are pre-installed with Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. The company has been selling UNIX workstations in the S-Family series supplied by Sun Microsystems Inc. on an OEM basis since 1988.

The new models differ in microprocessor speeds, the number of microprocessors and types of graphics accelerators.

The models FMV-PRO 6300T7A 3D and FMV-PRO 6300T7A 2D have 300MHz microprocessors and 512KB secondary cache memories, with an option for two CPUs. The main memory is EDO DRAM with ECC.

For graphics accelerators, the FMV-PRO 6300T7A 3D and FMV-PRO 6300T7A 2D models have the Intense 3D Pro 2200 for 3-D modeling, a three-dimensional graphics board developed by Intergraph Corp. of the United States.

They also use Fire GL1000 Pro AGP, a two-dimensional graphics board developed by Diamond Multimedia Systems Inc. of the United States. These two- and three-dimensional boards come as standard equipment.

The other two models, FMV-PRO 6266T7 3D and FMV-PRO 6266T7 2D, have 266MHz microprocessors and 512KB secondary cache memories.

The FMV-PRO 6266T7 3D model is equipped with Intergraph's graphics board, and the latter with Diamond Multimedia's graphics board as standard equipment. The other specifications are the same as those of the 6300T7A model.

The price of the 6300T7A 3D is 980,000 yen (US$7,780), and the 2D version of the same model is priced at 580,000 yen (US$4,600).

Fujitsu said the price of the 6266T7 3D is 910,000 yen (US$7,220), and the 2D version is priced at 510,000 yen (US$4,050). Sales are expected to total 20,000 units in the first year.
