Yeah Charters, We all saw how well those Russian Migs stood up to the F-15 in the Gulf War. Most of them turned tail and ran for their buddies in Iran. The ones that didn't were shot down.

Eric; The russian jets are based on a very short lived engine, that dies fast to give a higher power to weight than US jets. This generates faster higher flying planes. However the flying characteritics of the US jets allow them to defeat them, in terms of shorte radius turns, and the new vectored jet engine add-ons. In addition the central control also works agin the russians. It is a shame that there have never been true late model dogfights between trained MIG pilots and US/Israeli pilots. Most Arab pilots were not good enough to defeat the israelis no matter what was flown.
The USSR SAMs nearly wiped out the Israeli air force in the last war. A friend of mine was flown to israel at the start of the war(they found they had problems right away) to solve the problems, and to find a solution. They found that the russian radars were nearly all tube types. Well made but very drifty at warm up, and this drift mimicked a lock cycle and made it harder for the US ECM pods to combat them. After a few changes, and some new flight maneuvers the SAMs were no further problem.

The Israelis got a few defector MIGS and ran them through their paces to determine strengths/weaknesses, and they also gave them to the USA. However there was little counter leakage of US planes to russia,
and so they had mainly Vietnam war shootdowns to play with.

Bill

Charters you're Dyslexic...Korea, our kill ratio was 13-1 Vietnam it dropped to 4-1 in OUR favor....Migs have excellent engines, shitty computer and navigation-totally ancient, need the engines to power all the heavy computer equip. Mig 29's are now here by me at Wright-Patterson AFB that we bought from Moldova(former USSR) to keep from Iran grabbing because they have Nuclear Capability...
