I've been to several churches, because I am always interested to be dragged along to see what folks get up to. I've seen some pretty severe peer pressure for tithing. Really severe. Very very severe social stigma for free riding. And I'm not that in to this so if I get to hear about the folks who don't pay up, I imagine they get bitched about constantly- until they do. You may not hear about it because folks figure you are paying up enough- if you aren't, my guess is you are talked about plenty behind your back, and maybe to your face, but it's possible you are thick skinned enough not to notice. Whatever the reason, you should be able to understand the cancer of free riders- they destroy social systems, and there are always systems in place in any functional group effort to discourage them- free riders are why communism doesn't work, so you ought to at least understand that. Any social system which is set up must take in to account the greedy nature of the free rider, and work against that human tendency. Rational systems that force free riders to comply will work.
