<<still feel that it is his nature rather than a lack of experience which is the reason for the way he has negotiated issues.

I also agree with you....>>

"I am still in a state of doubt, although I lean your way."

Re Michelle that is what really confuses me. I thought from day one that having two brilliant African American minds would keep him from making large mistakes and keep him focused on the poor. But he doesn't seem to be. I know political wives who think, often are a male politicians top adviser.

Lately I have begun to think she shares Obama's ideas. And that is disconcerting to me. I can't imagine he is ignoring her.

What those two share in common is they both had to fight like hell to get where they are and may have little sympathy for others who do not fight e.g. Obama getting up at 4:30 to study and imagine what Michelle had to do to get her law degree from Harvard. And both are no nonsense folks.

And they may also both have some elitism in them, as much as we tend to think that is impossible. Martha;s Vineyard? I spent most of my life around liberal politicians. Many are much more shallow than one would expect from enlightened people i.e. BMW's and rubbing elbows with the rich and powerful. Fewer Thoreau's than one would expect.

In fact the shallowness of those I trust most, the liberals, has been my largest disappointment in life. Many liberals will always vote the right way if it doesn't cost them, but will not stand up if it does. I expect nothing from conservatives.

<<Michelle Obama keeps coming to mind. As his most trusted confidant, I want to know what she's thinking of all this. Because of her background and her temperament, I've much trouble imagining her being Ok with his performance negotiating with the R's....

She's someone I would have expected to shame him into going to Wisconsin to stand with those firemen, teachers and nurses....

This is a tough one. The US is a republic. Traditionally, presidents have stayed out of state affairs. I know if WA state was having a recall and GW Bush came in and supported the teapers, I would freak out.

Zeta, if the President has to go and stand in the picket lines, then it is an insult to the Presidency. It is a tacit admission that the Presidency is not powerful enough to get things done. Obama has sympathized with those folks. Besides, Michelle is probably smarter than Barack. She knows that is not for a President to stand in picket lines.

Richard Trumka was on TV and I heard him remark that labor is happy with Obama's support in Wisconsin. His 3 day midwest tour is something like him standing in the picket lines but is more Presidential. In this video, watch the growing backlash against Congress, particularly the Teaper congress folks: youtube.com

Obama has his way of getting things done. His ways are something which this country has never experienced. He is not the type who will take cheap shots to say "We will smoke out the terrorists from their foxholes" and then have nothing to show. He is not the type who will prematurely say "Mission Accomplished" and still have troops fighting 5 years after the claim. Instead, he is the type who will kill Osama, tell the nation about it in a 10 minute broadcast and move on. As someone said "America needs to be deserving of Obama before desiring one." The significance of this to me is that before we get disappointed with him because he failed "to meet our desires", we need to ask ourselves if we deserve him and if we think we do then we need to ponder if we have what it takes to understand him in its totality and not merely instance by instance such as not standing in the picket lines in WI.
