Cogito, I am very sorry to hear about your health problems.

I picked up the term "moocher class" from Weigel. Let me make a distinction clear. Today's Republicans don't object to aid to those who cannot help but be dependent: the very young, the very old, the disabled and infirm.

However, anytime you start talking about making a majority of people dependent on government, you are no longer talking about helping those who cannot help themselves; you are now talking about teaching dependence on government to the able-bodied. Republicans see this effort as destructive to the character of the individual so taught, destructive to society in general, and self-interested on the part of Democrats.
