This is why I like Rick Perry. He understands the spirit in which the US Constitution was written. It really is about limiting the powers that we give the federal government. He is a big proponent of the 10th amendment.

The 10th Amendment really sums it up well.
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people"

So unless a power is specifically given to the federal government in the Constitution, the federal government doesn't have that power. And unless the constitution specifically prohibits a power, the States and the people are free to do as they please.

The federal government was never meant to solve all of our problems.

But the US Constitution is pretty much ignored by our politicians (of both parties), both in specifics and in spirit.
