A cat. one storm is serious. Irene is big, indicating a substantial surge. I don't think the east coasters seem to understand that the surge is the most destructive aspect of the storm for it brings flooding. wind damage is relatively easy to deal with; flooding causes a lot of damage.

i'd be surprised if irene is a cat. one storm when she hits NYC, but the surge will be big nonetheless. if water gets into elevator systems, a lot of the tall bldgs. may be unavailable for a long time.

Equally irresponsible is using "catastrophic", "once in a lifetime event",
"historic damage" to describe an obviously weakening system that never was
as powerful as the "weather experts" were reporting it to be ..

They were reporting it to be exactly what it was. And using their best tools to project what it was going to be. They didn't make up the barometric pressure or the wind speeds, and the satellite shots were not photoshopped.

Let's just shut down the NHC Triff, they are just hype agents. Irene was a dud and it was always "obvious" to you (after the fact).

People already dying, some thru no fault of their own and some Darwin winners, 1M people without power, houses being destroyed; hardly hype.
