When it started in the 60's and more so in the 70's the economy collapsed.

we've never had free trade. USA trade has always been in a regulatory and tariffed environment.

There is nothing in free trade agreements that says we do not have tariff. Free trade has been accomplished through free trade agreements. These are legal treaties between nations. Those that do not abide by the treaty or do not agree to sign an agreement are still on the tariff. In fact the agreements allow tariffs between countries but these are balanced so that there is no protectionism, that is both countries use them or claim to use them so that the same balance is there. This makes the tariff only a revenue source with little to no protection to our economy. To simply strip away all tariffs as you seem to think wise would cause such a calamity I suspect you would end up starving in the street and in full agreement with me.
