Dugger-

I've had a few lively conversations with Andy and other serious speed figure proponents...

To take the analogy one step further, the bulk of the money which Andy has made stems from the marketing (or sales) of his figures through publications such as the Daily Racing Form, as opposed to profits generated from gambling. So, like many of the best known technical analysts, Beyer came to understand that it is far easier (and safer) to make money selling "the system", then it is to express confidence in the efficacy of it by gambling with one's own money.

I agree that "it's good to learn from others whenever they present variables we are not familiar with", as you put it. And that speaks directly to the distinction which I was trying to make between TECH and Jeff Mitchell: The former gives me the distinct impression that he tends not to follow that wise approach, while the latter clearly does.

(As an aside, I give Andy credit for recognizing his own limitations. Several years ago, for example, in the wake of Arazi's disappointing three-year-old campaign, Andy complimented me on having pointed out that he lacked scope immediately after his sensational Breeders' Cup victory. In doing so, he clearly implied that physical assessments were completely out of his realm.)
