Market Read: short-term

There is no leadership in the market to move it higher. The former darlings - drillers, drugs, and banks - are moving down according to a drummer of their own. Buy/sell programs will kick in this week for options arb, but do not be fooled by options flux. There is no strength to this market, no convincing buy volume. The market will continue to float with a downward bias ... the Asian crisis will take time to sort out. Witness companies are not able to predict the impact to their bottom line, hence multiple pre-warnings. If the companies themselves cannot forecast, why would one think the market can? Give me a break.

Techs are washed out, but bottom needs to set before they can move up with conviction.
