FDR died before we hit peak oil. There were no energy constraints on world growth.
Barack Obama was elected 3 years after we hit it. There are constraints now, and others are starting to eat our share of the pie, which won't get any bigger until alt en grows faster than oil production is declining, which should happen roughly in ... 2035.
