If they don't repay, they are simply thieves. > Presumably your client cannot read, cannot think, cannot do simple arithmetic, never learned responsibility or many, if any, of the Virtuous Victorian Values. No doubt the lender incurred some legal costs getting the judgment and enforcement and those costs are part of the debt. They must think "co-signing" is just a piece of paper to get past the bureaucracy to get the object of desire. People who shove large amounts of legalese seem to think I'm supposed to just sign it. "Oh it's just standard stuff". "Well, I'll read it at my standard speed then, which is not very fast. Shall we cross it out as being irrelevant or shall I sit comfy here in your office and read it?" It's obvious that most people just sign extensive papers shoved at them by so-called professionals. If your client doesn't pay on time, the creditor might not be able to feed their family. Do they not have bankruptcy laws where they are? Perhaps the court determined that your client is a bludging scoundrel who must be forced to repay the money they are trying to steal. Perhaps the repossessed vehicle was not worth much at all after repossession due to damage. There isn't enough information in your description for me to conclude your client is a "debt slave". But I am right now in a similar situation and I'll likely end up in court explaining why the lawyers for the government department are evil-doing extortionists operating capricious absurd rules which don't comply with NZ law. There is a difference in that I was aware from the beginning of how bad my situation could become and can terminate the process at any time by paying their absurd claims. They have threatened me already with your "Virginia law" - they will simply take it from my wages, or mortgage payments and blah blah blah. Which they can't do since I don't have those things and don't have to sell the house so they can't stop the sale until they are paid. They have to go to court. That's annoying for them. They are not used to people being able to oppose their kleptocratic bludging wastrel ways. I admit it's a waste of time really, I might lose, but such people quite annoy me and the processes are interesting, so it's a bit like playing golf - expensive, time consuming, there's nothing to show for it at the end, there is much commotion during the process, but there is some satisfaction and enjoyment gained. They lost last time over an unreasonable parking ticket [for my cute little motor scooter]. There must be hordes of people in situations like your client after decades of profligate wastrel mindless debt. I like the fact that the USA is so punitive of miscreants as it keeps most in line. As the seven dwarves march off to work in the mine, they sing "I owe, I owe, it's off to work we go. I owe I owe I owe I owe, I owe, I owe." Mqurice
