Authorities probe motive in Nev. IHOP shooting

By SANDRA CHEREB, 09.06.11, 07:48 PM EDT

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Associated Press Authorities are investigating whether mental illness was a factor in a shooting rampage at a Nevada restaurant that left two uniformed National Guard members dead and three wounded.

Authorities say the suspect, 32-year-old Eduardo Sencion of Carson City, also killed a female civilian and wounded five other people before shooting himself in the head. He later died at a hospital.

The gunman's motive was unclear, but authorities are investigating whether the military members were targeted.

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong says Sencion worked at his family's business in South Lake Tahoe. He was not in the military, and he had no known affiliations with anyone at the restaurant. Sencion also had no criminal history.

Furlong says Sencion's family raised concerns about his mental health in interviews with investigators. He didn't elaborate.
