>>contrary indicator

I still remember when Time magazine devoted most of an issue in the early-mid 1980's to "The Best Company" in the world, IBM.

IBM stock then promptly cratered as if on cue and "the best company in the world to work for" hemorrhaged rivers of red ink and hundreds of thousands of employees over the next decade. And that company still really hasn't recovered. In retrospect, you couldn't conceive of a greater contrary indicator. The real story, later learned, was that IBM was too big, too fat and too complacent.

But, then again that was Time, which ceased being a serious publication in the early 1960's. Unlike that lamented mag, Smart Money knows its business and you can bet Cisco management knows its business too and even more surely remembers the IBM debacle and is haunted by it. That is a good thing.
