Hi Jay:

From a transport / storage standpoint Silver is worse than gold.

Consider you need around 430 oz of silver to match 10 oz of gold (those 500 oz. boxes are heavy).

Then you have to keep the silver out of the air (sulfur turing the coin black) which then requires a special solution to clean (not polish as one will deminish the value of the coin).

Maybe a a silver cleaning business will be profitable in the future, but one will need security and a barrier to entry. :)

Storage it difficult for both. Security being the issue.

Don't be terribly surprised if USD goes up after obama's speech. Chuck butler of eve bank's daily pfennig believes stage is set for another corporate USD repatriation tax holiday scheme.

USD strength today seems to validate. But gold is so strong today, it is making no difference.

Odd, these money managers are just starting to clamor for real money?

I would have thought the astute (like your friend in 2009) would have already be positioned,
which begs the question, if the newcomers are less astute, is it late-in-the-game, climbing-on-the-bandwagon time,

or having finally seen the light from the beacon you have been holding aloft all these years, just the wayward finally recognizing the error of their ways and rectifying the hole in their asset allocation model?

Will they be faithful or bail upon the inevitable attempts to undermine confidence?

More questions than answers.

TJ.. Careful on your PM trades for the next few weeks..

Not liking where I see the Weekly MA's seem to be heading in SLV and GLD.

bigcharts.marketwatch.com

The 30 week MA on SLV has rolled over decisively.. Historical patterns suggest that more pressure on the metal lies ahead.

GLD is holding up better, but the 30 Week is showing signs of weakening and the MACD histogram indicates a peak was reached last week and it's downhill from here for at least a few months.

This all suggests that the USD is going to appreciate from here.

That's crazy to be carrying that much gold in a suitcase without serious security protection.

Sorry to say this, but it was stupid.. Even banks use Armored courier services for cash amounts far less than that.

My dad tells a similar story. He built a new house in Mexico back in the day. He put a bunch of centenario coins in a briefcase and walked to the bank to make construction loan payoff. The briefcase started to fall apart, so he hugged it to his chest. He said he was quite a sight, walking through Mexican streets, wobbling, hugging a briefcase. Gold was 35 USD per oz, coins 1.2 ounces.

Family has a huge gold history. Great grandfather was a substantial arms dealer on border during Mexican revolution, famous for selling weapons and ammo to anyone who paid in gold. Grandfather was a hoarder and so was father. I have inherited a tiny fraction of the loot, will keep forever for sentimental reasons.
