I think your story is more unique to Catholicism than religion in general. The Catholic Church in particular is very strong on doctrine.

Just because atheism isn't the status quo doesn't mean religion is only the result of indoctrination. That seems to be the line of thinking you are using.

...i personally "bathed" in it all through high school...home, school, church, catechism etc...until a certain age I had no choice in the matter...at school it was a subject in which we held class...twice a week a priest would come and "teach" religion class...

Based on what liberals here have said, Ali ought to have been thoroughly and irretrievably indoctrinated with no ability to escape.
