One of those abstractions like the anarchist demonstrations against the World Bank and IMF we see here every year. The World Bank and IMF are situated actually quite close to the White House but the buildings around there are pretty boring, in a pretty sort of way, with fountains and patios and public sculptures. World headquarters of the Red Cross. National headquarters of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Organization of American States (OAS). George Washington University. Nothing to steal. Not much fun to break. Police put up the barricades, and the nice young people are almost polite when they are carted off to DC jail, awaiting bail and soon returning to their homes for clean clothes and warm dinners, congratulating themselves on being something or other, having done something or other significant. Which reminds me, no looting after 9/11. Nor after Hurricane Irene. Not the sort of thing that touches off "Christmas Came Early" riots. Wouldn't be surprised to see riots and looting in Atlanta when Troy Anthony Davis, convicted cop-killer, is executed on Wednesday. That's the sort of thing that people use as excuses to riot. Well, of course, executions don't cause riots, like rain gets everything wet. People choose to riot. Some of them hoping that Christmas Comes Early. Some just looking for a little bit of fun, letting off steam, by breaking things that belong to someone else. Épater la bourgeoisie and all that. In America, most of us would love to be in the bourgeoisie, if we are not already. Are the unemployed going to riot in New York because they don't have jobs? Ha. The people who riot never had jobs to begin with, and are almost certainly unwilling or unable to take one if it were offered. The people who want jobs are polishing their resumes, hoping to get into, or back into, the bourgeoisie. Convictions for vandalism are not good for the resume. Not this year, Jay. Sorry.
