"Economists and others started using the term "Depression" after everyone found the term "Panic" too scary.

Since Depression has become to scary, the term Recession was then used.

Now that everyone knows that Recession is really, really bad, look for the term "warm bunny" to be used in the next economic cycle...."

OTOH, Congress never intended for stockholders to be able to use "Wash Sales" of securities to manipulate the year in which income falls. So, when some bright people realized they could do this, the Wash Sale Rules were created to stop it.

Resulting in less flexibility for stock trading patterns for people whether or not they tried to manipulate the year in which income falls. Personally I woudn't mind seeing the wash sale rule done away with.
