" I don't think he was this nutty when he was younger- but hey, maybe he was."

The book that got him started, "Unsafe at any Speed", attacked the Corvair, Chevy's first attempt at building a small, fuel efficient, great handling car. It attacked the Corvair for having a swing rear axle suspension and being more prone to rollovers because of it.

Another car had swing rear axles, an even higher center of gravity, and was never mentioned - ALL models of Volkswagens! Corvair fixed the problem with their rear axles, Volkswagen didn't until a decade later.

Nader's book helped kill the Corvair, a really great car for it's time.

Nader is a nut. It's amazing to watch him devolve into an ever nuttier guy. I don't think he was this nutty when he was younger- but hey, maybe he was.

He was pretty nutty when young. Lived alone in a small apartment and didn't drive. Sort of an ascetic. A budding zealot.

I remember I was at a party at my ex's in Olympia and we were all liberals (all our kids and friends were there) arguing about Nader. I was very anti Nader, but some of the kids not so much. My ex was always the smartest of all of us and was always the queen bee, but she didn't feel well that night, so was sort of quiet.

But as some of the kids (all university educated) started ganging up on me, she finally stood up and quietly said: "I hold Nader responsible for all the killing in the middle east". That settled that-lol.

She was remarried (both she and her husband are lawyers), but she always did come to my defense.
