Front wheel drive is interesting. I drive on snow and ice many months every year. Over 40 years. The best thing for driving on ice and snow is front wheel drive, IMO. The worst is rear wheel drive and four wheel drive is still being debated. My own feeling is that front wheel drive with 4 studs is the safest.

The only two times I ever spun out on ice was when I was in four wheel drive and not going very fast. My deduction was that having all four wheels pushing/pulling, pushed me off the ice. So I don't use four wheel drive in snow or ice except when the snow is deep or the incline is steep.

I stick to two wheel, front wheel drive with 4 studs.

I drove a 1962 Corvair for years. It was a dangerous little thing but it was cheap.
I pooh-poohed Nader back then. But he actually was right. Handled horribly on the interstate.
But since it floated around like a kite, at age 19, I thought it was fun.
I finally put two concrete blocks in the front end trunk which stabilized it. But that caused a drop
in gas mileage.
The Corvair was rear-engined and had rear wheel drive. Not front wheel.
I know many Corvair lovers hold a grudge against Nader for his criticisms. Not me.

I had a perfect track record back then. I bought a Ford Pinto hatchback for $1995.
Man was that a horrible car. Nader also correctly pointed out it was dangerous.

The Pinto had the dubious distinction of being on several 'all time worst car' lists.
But it was cheap. And for a soldier just re-entering civilian life in a low paying job,
it filled the bill. My next car was a Chevy Impala V-8. Did 136 miles an hour. I suppose
you might say I over reacted to the Pinto :)

"Nader trashed it for having front-wheel drive, which he claimed would cause dangerous under-steer, and cause accidents."

This is not correct. The Corvair was an air cooled, rear engine, rear wheel drive car like the Volkswagen, with which it shared the trait of rear swing axles, which make both cars more prone to rollovers. Corvair fixed that tendency, VW didn't until years later. Neither car was excessively dangerous.
