That's part of it, a tax system that kept government funding roughly in line with the size of the economy would eliminate a lot of the opportunities for debt driven largess. The other part is that by eliminating deductions there would be no incentive to lobby government for rent seeking favors.

I'm sure it's a bit more complicated than this (although maybe not), there are theoretical reasons to incur debt which could be dealt with by a super majority stipulation when those situations arose.

At the very least it would allow a clearer view of what politicians are doing in our name and reduce the opportunities for 'crony capitalism'.

These are still half-baked thoughts I'm tossing around in my head. The un-half-baked part is that what we are doing now just doesn't cut it. If what your doing isn't working, try something else.
