I know it is only one game and in 2006 the Tigers lost game one and proceeded to win the next 3 games to win the series. But this series is beginning to conspire against the Tigers. I'm not talking about the obvious fact that the best pitcher in the American league can now only impact one game in this five game series. It goes much deeper than that. The Tigers played hit and run last night and the batter hit the ball right to the second base bag where Canoe was covering for an easy double play. If the manager didn't call for a hit and run, the Tigers would have had two on with no out, down by only one run at the time. The bottom of the inning saw the Yankees play hit and run and Jeter hit the ball in the vacated hole where the second baseman would've made an easy play to end the inning and prevent the Canoe grand slam which put the game out of reach.

I'm not blaming Jimmy Leland. The guy is a very good manager. I just have to wonder what he said to catcher Alex Avilla for not sliding into home plate where he clearly would've scored if he slid. Sure, Jeter made a perfect throw to the plate to cut down Avilla. But it was only a perfect throw because Avilla did not slide! Why didn't the slow footed Avilla slide? Did he really think he would score easily?
