They outlawed weed originally in order to harass blacks and hispanics (who were the main smokers back then - whites generally stuck with alcohol). And when jazz came around the laws became even stricter. Weed was associated with jazz and the mingling of white women with black men. And so of course the government had to get involved to save us. A few decades later you could go to prison for 10 years for having the wrong plant in your garden. And peoples urine was being tested as a condition for working ... It always interests me when some folks complain about growing intrusive governmental power - but are perfectly happy about the government dictating the blood chemistry of its citizens.
