You know as well as anyone how beat up we liberals are near the end of our lifetime. I have been a hard core liberal dem for almost 50 years. I never wavered, as I always knew what it meant. It meant helping the poor and downtroden, and trying to build a civilized society. But sometimes I do get tired of the beatings I get.

I go on other threads and have to defend kindess and compassion. I can't believe it. It is crazy how many people believe Ayn Rand's madness that greed is good and the masses are just lice and vermin.

During the 60's, it was friends like Rat and onepath that always kept me going. When I first joined the counter culture I was shunned by virtually every friend I had and my own father. I have not told that story for a long time. It was horrible. I still remember one old friend Dennis Simpkins coming up to me and asking me: "what are you doing"?

One of my favorite stories, I am sure you have heard, is when Henry David Thoreau was in jail (for some sort of civil disobediance), Ralph Waldo Emerson came to bail him out. Emerson asked: what are you doing in there"? To which Thoreau responed:"what are you doing out there".

Little laugh on my part as I finished typing.
