The average person has no idea how much the rich and powerful manipulate our congress to get legislation beneficial to them and how outragous some of it is.

to show the tenacity and limits corporations will go to to get what they want (like low taxes or tax breaks) one needs look no farther than my state. In the last decade no less than a dozen legislators and lobbyists have been indicted or convicted of bribary by the oil companies and their minions.
