SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 1997--
Joint Projects Establish The Industry's Largest Reported ATM/Fast Ethernet Network
Global networking leader 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS), and Telecom Equipment Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Telecom Group, have successfully installed three networks for the government sector of Singapore. The networks for the Treasury, the Ministry of Labour and the Registry of Companies & Businesses have resulted in the largest reported integrated ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) network with Fast Ethernet at the desktop. 3Com and one of Singapore's leading network systems integrators, Telecom Equipment, have successfully implemented a highly reliable, secure and technologically advanced campus backbone for the three Ministries in Singapore. The network connects 50 servers to the ATM backbone and 1,500 users to Fast Ethernet using 3Com's Fast Ethernet network interface cards. 3Com and Telecom Equipment were jointly responsible for designing the comprehensive network's architecture. Telecom Equipment provided the network systems integration services. The networking solution will boost efficiency and streamline operations for effective management of the ministries. "3Com is delighted to have been awarded the tender by the Ministries and the National Computer Board for this important project," said Marcel Jacobs, managing director for 3Com South Asia. "In pursuing a best of breed standard-based networking environment, 3Com has built the world's largest campus network with Fast Ethernet to the desktop and ATM in the backbone. The Ministries now have a very robust network that moves large amounts of information without creating bottlenecks. This network infrastructure is also built to provide multimedia applications that integrate voice, video and data." Lim Tow Seng, chief operating officer of Telecom Equipment added, "The networks that we have implemented are based on a proven design to meet the current and future requirements of the Ministries. Through strategic partnerships with industry leaders such as 3Com, a superior project team was assembled to ensure smooth implementation of the proposed network solution. The result - a cost effective, reliable, manageable and high-performance network that not only responds readily to user demand, but is fully geared to meet the challenges of the next millennium." The following provides details each successful network:
The Treasury Housing the largest government network in Singapore, the Treasury has the world's largest integrated ATM/Fast Ethernet network -- specifically, Fast Ethernet to the desktop and ATM in the campus backbone. Linking the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Labour, and the Prime Minister's Office, Telecom Equipment deployed ATM technology consisting of a network based on 29 3Com CoreBuilder(TM) 7000HD high-function switches and 29 3Com 76000TX modules, interconnected by dual ATM links and supporting the 1,500 users. The Treasury project is a showcase of successful integration and interoperability of advanced networking technologies using the LAN Emulation (LANE) Version 1.0 standard from the ATM Forum. Deploying ATM, Fast Ethernet and Token Ring solutions, 3Com provided a switched, scaleable, reliable, high performance, manageable and secure network infrastructure. Due to the significant critical nature of communication within the Treasury, Telecom Equipment's implementation of a homogenous single platform allows efficient and competent management of a scaleable, integrated network.
Ministry of Labour With the key task of managing Singapore's labour market, the Ministry of Labour required an efficient infrastructure to enhance the means of communication to meet the needs of workers and employers alike. The Ministry implemented two CoreBuilder 7000HD high-function switches together with redundant links using LANE Version 1.0. Virtual LANs allow the network manager to establish logical workgroups regardless of their physical connections. These location-independent broadcast domains are more flexible and allow for cost-effective management. Comprised of 3Com's SuperStackr II FMS 100Mbps hubs and SuperStack II 10Mbps switches, the architecture provides for link redundancy that ensures high reliability in the network infrastructure.
Registry of Companies & Businesses (RCB) The Registry's mission is to provide a system for the registration of business entities and for their compliance with statutory disclosure requirements. Its primary objective is to offer fast and efficient service to the companies and businesses as well as members of the public who require speedy, pertinent information of the registered parties. Telecom Equipment upgraded the RCB architecture through a Fast Ethernet network using the 3Com CoreBuilder 7000HD high-function switch as the central switch. The network is also "ATM-ready" which allows ATM components to be added on to existing equipment to meet future needs of higher network bandwidth as RCB operations grow. With 3Com's Transcendr Enterprise Manager for Windows, network administrators will be able to use a user-friendly graphical interface to manage 3Com and other SNMP-compliant devices within the network. Throughout the upgrading project, Telecom Equipment took special measures to minimize any disruption of services to RCB's operations.
Products Of The New Network Infrastructure The CoreBuilder 7000HD high-function switch is an ATM switch that provides Fast Ethernet, Ethernet and ATM connections within a non-blocking switching architecture. By using a single system as an edge, a core device and a server farm, the network architecture provides better scalability, flexibility and high aggregate bandwidth. The switch supports multiple ATM link redundancies and load balancing, redundant switching engine, redundant power supply and has a passive backplane and integrated LANE Ver.1.0 services. Therefore, high reliability to the network is ensured. Transcend ATM-VLAN allows the network manager to establish logical workgroups independent of physical connections. Virtual LANs are location-independent broadcast domains, which allow flexible and cost-effective management.
