Bell labs built one transistor - at least that is what the article described.

A single MOS transistor is rather simple to produce - e-beam direct write photolithography can easily be used to define the structures with geometries (apparently) well below 0.05 microns. Bell Labs has been pushing this (electron-beam) for 25 years at least.

Silicon, a thin gate oxide and polysilicon will suffice to make the transistor, and throw in a few contacts and metal for electrical connections.

The trick is to do this 10 million times per chip and hook all those transistors together to perfrom something useful.
