The big topic is now what to do about blowout games. Several years ago we had this guy, Coach Cochran, who didn't believe you should ever let up and would win games like 70 or 80 something to nothing. CT then created the Cochran rule that said the coach of a team that exceeded a 50 point margin would face possible suspension. While this seemed like the sportsman-like thing to do, it created awkward situations where teams would be kneeling down with a quarter left to play, or purposefully fall down to let the other team score. CT is now looking to change this rule. The big question is how. Option 1: Grow a Pair This would totally eliminate any scoring cap. Pro: Yes, of course you should put in the reserves once you go up by 50, but at least let these guys, your heirs apparent, be able to have the thrill of scoring. If you get your ass kicked, man up. This is high school, not peewees. Con: Sometimes you just have to legislate against hardcore coaches who think they are in the NFL, not high school. With such a disparity in team strength, there's a real danger of kids on the lesser team getting hurt so the sooner you can get a maniac coach to shut it down the better. Option 2: Running Clock Once a team surpasses a set margin, say 50 points, the clock begins to run continually. Pro This assures the blowout is over that much quicker and thus there's less time to run up the score. At this point it's no longer a competition so let's all go home ASAP. Con: It shortchanges the reserves who come into the game towards the end. With only 10 games over the course of a long grueling season, why give up any of those precious 48 minutes you are allowed. This years reserves are next years starters where the more playing time they can get the more prepared they will be for the future. Option 3: TKO When the scoring margin reaches 50, or when both teams consent to it, the score becomes official. The game still continues as normal but additional scores are not tallied as part of the final score. Pro: Can't run up the (official) score, no worries about your team's stats being sullied by the reserves (which could affect your poll rankings), no need to run every play between the tackles to show good sportsmanship, no adjustment required to the rules of the game. Con: When the game is essentially over, just end it ASAP. Play the reserves earlier or in another game. Kids who are demoralized and not playing their hardest are more likely to be injured. ----- Which is the better option and why? - Jeff
