A coach in my town was winning 67-5 in a 13-14 year olds basketball game with 5 minutes to go and had his starters in the game running a full court press against the opponent. I almost decked him myself.

I favor option 3, the mercy rule. There's no point in prolonging the inevitable. And it's a way to encourage coaches on both sides to use the reserves.

I think the arguments for options 2 and 3 show a need for people to make up their minds. Is it "shortchanging" the reserves to truncate their playing time, or "demoralizing" to make them slog through to the end?
