You're right, it is a serious claim, and for that reason people try to find other phrases for fascism (Crony capitalism, American capitalism). How do you define fascism?

In many ways the fascism they had in parts of Europe was a much better safety net for the working class than capitalism of today in the states. They certainly didn't have the freedom's we do but also weren't debt slaves and had better opportunities to make a living wage. Think more like the French or Dutch type economic socialism of today but with a dominant military and much less freedom. en.wikipedia.org
