>> Every politician has fans. That means nothing to me.

True, I think that's fair.

>> What means something to me is that there were two cash settlements

We know of one, and it was for $35,000 -- a year's pay, which NYT has said was "severance pay to leave the organization". $35K is not enough for a legitimate sexual harassment claim. That is less than what it would have cost NRA to defend itself it court at the time (today, it is easily 100K for such a defense).

Another very suspicious aspect of this claim is that one of the women involved is wanting to "speak out" -- after her attorney claimed she was dragged through the mud. What doesn't wash, of course, is that no one had any inkling of who she was, so by definition, she wasn't dragged through the mud. This really has the tinge of someone who is wanting to find a way to make yet another buck off a 10 year old claim that was already put to rest, or worse, may have a personal vendetta against Cain.

The reporting on the story was exceptionally thinly sourced, equivalent to throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

This is just the lousy side of politics. I *THINK* it has been poorly handled by Cain, although I'm not certain of that. When someone starts hurling these kinds of accusations, you're usually going to be hurt by them. I'm not sure at all that he has been, so whether it has been mis-handled I'm not sure. I do believe he could have gotten his terminology correct on the term "settlement", and you would think he would have gotten on top of the facts during the 10 days when he knew this was coming. That could just be inexperience in dealing with the media, however.
