Great post. But one thing always bothers me is liberalism tends to make costs of everything, especially housing, go through the roof so becomes next to impossible for the next generation to live as modestly as hippies did. Unless you want to live in a van down by the river in the bible belt or an inner city ghetto.. I am also sure it also had much to do with the steep rise in health care and education costs as well. Capitalism and easy financing did it's dirty deed in recent decades on multiple fronts with both parties at fault.
