Because he didn't have to dive to reach the car, it's hood was sitting on the bottom of the pond and one of the tires was at the surface. So his story of repeated dives in which he was unable to find or reach the car don't make sense. Furthermore, his claims he wanted to rescue Kopechne make no sense given his walking past multiple houses, some lighted, without seeking aid. Even the swimming the channel from Chappaquidick Island to Edgartown is questionable, considering he said he was exhausted from trying to rescue Kopechne. The casual conversations he had with folks at the motel in Edgartown don't make sense. Nothing in his story makes sense.
