What the Finns do have is very high quality social care, and extensive preschool services for every child, so that when a child enters school, they are truly ready to learn. Could we learn from that? Sure. But will we? No. It's just too expensive for US folks to put up with. So when you say they spend less, that really isn't true. The dollars are going in to preschool and support services that aren't counted as "education", but in reality it is part of the educational success story. You probably ought to listen to your sister. It sounds like she might know a lot more about the Finnish system than you do. But of course, if you don't value education, I can understand why you would discount the opinion of your sister who works in the field. Do you do the same thing to other professionals? Read a news byte and then figure they don't know what they are talking about? It's interesting how many folks think they are experts on fixing the educational system, even though they've never taught in it, or learned much about how it works, or what the various component parts are doing. I see the weirdest statements on SI about education. Some people think we're not teaching history. Some nutbars (no one on this thread, of course) are convinced it's socialist propaganda 24-7, despite the fact that the standards we must teach so pack the curriculum you wouldn't have time to teach socialist propaganda even if you wanted to.
