George,

There may be more of a market for 1/4 Gig gear than most of us think. My own network, switched 100 Megabit Fast Ethernet, is too slow many times. (I get about 8-9 Megabytes per second of sustained throughput.) 1 Gig Fibre Channel (or Gigabit Ethernet) would probably be overkill, given my collection of workstations and servers, but 1/4 Gig Fibre Channel would be about right. (Based on the press release figure of a 20 Megabytes per second sustained transfer rate, that would be a two to two and a half times throughput increase over what I get now.)

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Geoquest 1 Gig? It would be interesting to know how their application differs from Amoco. I would also like to know what speed ATM this replaced. I have a hunch it was 25 Megabit, since 1/4 Gig Fibre Channel wouldn't offer that much improvement over 155 Megabit ATM. (At least in theory. <g>)

Did anyone else notice that Ken H. sounded bullish about the NETWORKING side of Fibre Channel during the conference call? That surprised me. I thought he would downplay networking, and push the storage side.

Craig (Trying out new glare filter.)
