The only way I know of for US citizens to buy HK stocks is through
a U.S. broker. Whoever your current broker is should be able to buy
them for you. Especially a Hang Seng component like Wheelock.

The only other ways I know of are:

1) Canadian residents can open an account with HSBC, as they have
brokerage services offered in Canada.

2) Your Chinese friends could but it, but I make NO representation
as to the legality, laws or tax issues of your involvement in
such an account. (I've never done it & have no idea what they are.)
