Hawk, let's be charitable, TJ lives in fear: <But you have chosen to ignore the ugly aspects of China's history. > Toeing the party line, or towing it as some prefer, is essential in such circumstances. In China, it's quite obvious that beneath the superficially compliant exteriors there is no particular enthusiasm for the totalitarian megalomaniacs. Which is not to say there are not plenty of enthusiasts for the realm because there are and the number might even be growing - rabid nationalism is common enough.

I would be very circumspect if I was in his position. He travels throughout China and has to be in good form with the bosses and at least act as though he totally agrees, even if he has some secret misgivings.

It was quite amusing at the 50th celebrations with everyone going through the motions with Jiang Zemin calling "Seig" and the crowd calling back "Heil". It was in Mandarin so I don't know the exact translation of the call, but that's what it meant.
