"Dell, 3Com To Produce Network-Ready Notebooks"

<Thursday, November 20 >

3Com Corp. says it will sign up Dell Computer
next week as one of the first PC vendors in an
expanded version of 3Com's network-ready
program for notebook computers. The program lets mobile
users of a 3Com modem or preconfigured and installed LAN
PC Card connect to a network right out of the box. Often a
modem or network card must be configured before it will run on
a new notebook, says Rich Redelfs, senior director of marketing
for 3Com's mobile group.

The deal, announced at Comdex/Fall in Las Vegas, is
particularly important because of the growing use of notebook
computers as replacements for desktop units, Redelfs says.
3Com's mobile offerings include LAN and WAN connections,
and the company has nearly 40% of the PC Card modem
market, according to Dataquest.

Dell was 3Com's first network-ready partner when 3Com, in
Santa Clara, Calif., began the program two years ago for
desktop systems. Other PC vendors and resellers are expected
to be added shortly, says Redelfs.

This piece talks about rmbs, amat, coms etc ...

"Shares of Applied Materials Inc. slid in after-market following the tech
bellwether's fourth-quarter earnings release. The company reported a net
income of 49 cents a share, excluding a one-time charge, beating the
consensus estimate by 3 cents. The company reported sales of $1.28
billion, an increase of 48 percent from the previous year. UBS Securities
analyst Mark Fitzgerald said Applied, which makes
semiconductor-manufacturing equipment, had a good September quarter.
But that doesn't hold for competitors, largely because of uncertainty over
the economy in Asian countries. Rising interest rates and currency
devaluations -- the twin problems driving that region's crisis -- are
pressuring Applied Materials' chip-making customers. The stock closed
up 2 1/8 to 37 5/8."
